Local Radio for Local People

Brief History

Northern Midlands Community Broadcasters (Heart FM), formed out of a need they saw the Midlands had for a local radio station. In the region, smaller communities have been merged together under larger council districts, creating fragmentation and a sense of disunity in the broader community. We believe that a local radio station will help to form a common voice over the region that both represents and promote it, to itself and a tourist audience.
From November 30th, 2001 the “Northern Midlands Community Broadcasters” began operating Heart FM on a Temporary Community Broadcasting License to a potential audience of around 10,000 people. Our full time license took effect on May 1st 2003.  Since then the station has been operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from its studios in Gordon St Poatina.
Heart FM has an easy listening "Hits & Memories" format with music from the 60's to current with special features sprinkled throughout the day.

They include:  “A Tassie Morning” with Mal Garvin ( weekdays 9-10am) featuring interviews with local personalities, businesses and politicians keeping the audience stimulated with local and statewide issues.

"Country Lunchbox" with David Bunt each weekday from 12midday to 1pm featuring Country music & including the "rural report".
For the younger audience, “The Captain Midnight Show” is heard 6 nights - Monday to Saturday 9-12 midnight. The Captain and his crew feature the latest in new music, movie, band and web reviews and a fun crew that enjoys taking your calls and requests.

Heart FM is committed to its local community, throughout each day there is a community diary feature as well as regular talk spots with locals, such as the mayor, business owners (local video shop keeping you up to date with all the latest releases), gardening to name a few. "Out and About" shows go to local community events and cover them, celebrating with the community what they do best.
